‘D’ gets no love in MVP

- BY MARK FISCHER

It’s worth arguing Julian Edelman didn’t deserve Super Bowl MVP.

While it certainly wasn’t as egregious as Andre Iguodala earning NBA Finals MVP in 2015, many across the gridiron community were enraged over the voters selecting Edelman and his 140 receiving yards instead of a moredeserving Patriots defender.

“The offense only scores 13 points and they give MVP to Edelman but the D only gave up 3 points and (Stephon) Gilmore had forced a fumble, a int, 3 PBUs and 5 Tackles!?! Smh no respect for the masterpiece on Defense!” tweeted Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell after the game.

As it turns out, no one on the other side of the ball for the Patriots received even a single vote for MVP, Sports Illustrated reported Tuesday.

Edelman’s title wasn’t unanimous, but he did receive the bulk of votes cast from the panel of 16, comprised of members of the Pro Football Writers Association of America, selected members of the electronic broadcast media and by fans interactively through NFL.com.

It’s likely Tom Brady, who posted his worst statistical performance in a Super Bowl victory (21-35 for 262 yards and an INT), RB Sony Michel (95 yards and the game’s lone TD) and TE Rob Gronkowski (six catches, 87 yards) earned the rest. No one else warranted much consideration beyond those three.

But Gilmore’s outing — which included a dagger interception late — proved to be more pivotal in the Pats’ sixth championship. Yet, we don’t see Gilmore or Dont’a Hightower (two sacks, two tackles for loss, three quarterback hits and a pass deflection) parading around Disney alongside Brady.
