Breaking down the deals and what
A look at the aftermath of the NBA trade deadline:
Sixers & Clippers
Sixers acquired: Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, Mike Scott Clippers acquired: Landry Shamet, Wilson Chandler, Mike Muscala, 2020 first-round pick, 2021 first-round pick (via Miami), 2021 second-round pick, 2023 second-round pick
Analysis: A deal that makes sense for both sides. The Sixers are pushing for a Finals appearance and Harris is having a borderline AllStar season. The big question, though – what does this mean for Jimmy Butler’s future in Philly? The Clippers are setting themselves up for a big free-agent push this summer and also acquired picks in this deal to try and entice the Pelicans into a deal for Anthony Davis.
Suns & Heat
Suns acquired: Tyler Johnson, Wayne Ellington Heat acquired: Ryan Anderson
Analysis: The Suns took on Johnson’s unappealing contract to see if they can extract something more out of the guard. Good luck. The Heat is one of the best in the business in player development and the Suns have been a disaster. For Miami, this was about dumping salary for a contract (Anderson’s) that is only partially guaranteed.
Pistons & Bucks
Pistons acquired: Thon Maker Bucks acquired: Stanley Johnson
Analysis: Basically teams swapping young and underachieving prospects to one another hoping to jar something loose. Maker, the 10th overall pick in 2016, just never worked out in Milwaukee.
Bulls & Wizards
Bulls acquired: Otto
Porter Jr.
Wizards acquired: Bobby Portis, Jabari Parker, 2023 second-round pick
Analysis: Seriously, what the heck are the Wizards doing? They’re neither trying to compete nor rebuilding. They’re teetering and the front office is simply surviving. Trading Otto Porter makes sense if they were also willing to trade Bradley Beal, which, apparently, they weren’t. The Wizards are a mess and owe the injured John Wall a boatload of money.
Kings & Mavericks
Kings acquired: Harrison Barnes Mavs acquired: Zach Randolph, Justin Jackson
Analysis: Nobody pays attention because they’re the Kings, but Sac is actually playing well this season. The move for Barnes was meant to assist in a push for a playoff spot, while the Mavericks are moving in a different direction and created cap space for the summer with this move.
Pelicans & Bucks
Pelicans acquired: Jason Smith, Stanley Johnson, four future second-round picks Bucks acquired: Nikola Mirotic
Analysis: Four secondround picks is somewhat costly but the Bucks are going for it this year and Mirotic, a sharpshooting big man, fits perfectly in Mike Budenholz-
