Like them, I too believe that our federal government should do more and spend more to help make the lives of our citizens better just like our traditional allies do. However, there has never been a truly “socialist” economy in the history of the world which was ever able to produce enough wealth to meet the survival needs of its citizens. It has never worked. So it is foolish to call yourself a socialist. You are just giving conservatives a new insult and put-down to call you. A lot has been said about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal to tax the marginal incomes of those earning over $10 million a year by 70%. The problem with this is that we need to start taxing wealth because that’s where we can get enough revenue to pass a Canadian-style national health insurance program to cover and greatly help 99% of Americans. Her income tax won’t raise anywhere close to what a wealth tax on all those individuals with a net-wealth and net-worth of $10 million and higher would raise. ochester: Stewart B. Epstein in American history, on a per capita basis? You mean New York has the highest taxes overall in the entire nation? Then why did the press hail the record tax hikes of those three GOP snakes? A poor excuse Scarsdale, N.Y.: It seems that, overnight, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become the darling poster girl for the leftleaning part of the Democratic Party. Her face and picture are everywhere, including latenight TV. She claims to be an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised of the country. Her goal is not to help anyone but herself. She should do some research on socialism before she spouts things she knows nothing about. Kudos to our President for telling the people the United States will never become a socialist country. God bless America and everything she has stood for lo these many years. means but we waited. At 6:15, with no one being called inside, we finally left. I don’t know if it was in retaliation for the protest over the weekend but it was a disgrace. I never got to see my son. We traveled an hour and a half from Long Island. — however unjust on a human level — of the black-and-white racial divide? Further add to the already volatile mix that we males are also predisposed to the testosterone factor and one can find Neeson “looking to be set upon [in a black-resident neighborhood] so that I could unleash physical violence.” Even if one, including myself, cannot reason himself away from such unpleasant reactive emotions, one at least can be aware of them and their unacceptability in a civilly humane society. back at a later date without giving me the opportunity to hold for assistance. The third time I called, I was placed on hold for 30 minutes until an assistance operator curtly informed me that the instruction booklet was still not available in print! (This is at the height of the filing tax season.) This abysmal service experience left me wondering as to the negative impact it has on the voluntary tax compliance rates. Maybe it would be appropriate to rename the agency the Internal Revenue Disservice, or better yet, return to the original designation of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, since they provide no tangible service. Lindsay Ritz Blackout Manhattan: I am writing this letter because Attorney General Letitia James’ false claim that immigrants built New York City. Actually it was enslaved black Africans who built the infrastructure of lower Manhattan that is still in use today. To ignore, minimize or disregard these facts is extremely offensive. Despite popular belief, we are not all immigrants. People brought to the New World in chains were never immigrants and neither are their descendants; we are American descendants of Slaves. It’s baffling that an educated black woman would make such a statement to win favor with immigrants and undocumented people at the expense of a group whose contributions made New York City and state the great city and state they are today. Theresa Meoni Cool it Ozone Park: Can we all grow up? This silliness about the governor of Virginia acting like an idiot in college by going to a party as Michael Jackson and wearing blackface — like none of those calling for his crucifixion ever did anything dumb when they were young. How far back are we going to go in people’s lives? Maybe in kindergarten a little boy called a little girl a poop. Frank Sterle Jr. Helen Centorrino Hypocrites all Buy a clue Bay Shore, L.I.: To Voicer Mildred Manham: If you would like to talk about hypocrisy and insincerity as something evil, then look at the pro-choice groups. First of all, they are so proud of their rights to abortion that they won’t even speak it by name. They call it “choice” or “reproductive health” (euphemism red flags). And Planned Parenthood? What parenthood? They provide abortions at their skeptical rate of 3% of their budget. Does that include counseling, pre-op and post-op services or just the hardcore actions of dismembering and flushing of the fetus? If they planned parenthood, wouldn’t they offer infertility treatments and adoption? Donald Kempler Carle Place, L.I.: When I was in high school, I’m sure I had some really hare-brained ideas. But I was 14 years old. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is 29. What’s her excuse? A little respect Ann Rychlenski Franklin Square, L.I.: I arrived at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday to visit my son who is an inmate there. There were barricades surrounding the front of the building. The forms were given out at 4:45 by a guard in full riot gear. We filled them out and returned them, then waited for our names to be called (visiting is from 5 to 8). All the families were there in this little enclosure, freezing with no word. My son went up to the guard twice to ask what was the holdup; he was told the count was off. I don’t know what that Only natural? Rudy Rosenberg II White Rock, British Columbia: Research shows that babies of all races innately prefer the close proximity of other members of their own race, although the gradual acquisition of racial intolerance is typically environmental, such as from parents or extended caregivers. So, one’s natural notation of others’ skin-color is instinctual. Thus, perhaps actor Liam Neeson not only had reason to be outraged at his brutally raped close friend’s perpetrator, but also had the additional motivation How we got here Heyward Johnson Jr. Manhattan: It’s not Status Cuomo’s fault New York’s tax revenues are lagging this year. As the press told us for 20 years, GOP Rudy Bloombucks Pataki slashed New York’s taxes so much, New York has the lowest taxes in the nation! Where is Cuomo supposed to get the cash from? What’s that? You say Rudy and Mike and George, in fact, raised taxes more than any other politicians Taxing Brooklyn: Last week I had the unpleasant experience of attempting to call the IRS tollfree number for forms and tax publications in an effort to obtain the instruction booklet for Form 1040. The first two times I called, the automated service advised that due to heavy call volume, I should call Linda Garramone
