Speeding BMW drivers charged in Bx. crash
Two men racing BMWs who sparked a multivehicle crash on a Bronx highway that critically injured another driver have been charged with intoxicated and reckless driving, police said Monday.
Authorities say Jahmeik White, 23, of Wakefield, the Bronx, and Christopher Coates, 31, of Peekskill, Westchester County, were speeding north on the New England Thruway near Bartow Ave. in Co-op City when White’s BMW coupe rear-ended a Kia sedan around 7:10 p.m. Sunday.
The Kia then slammed into a Honda SUV, which in turn struck Coates’ BMW sedan, police said.
The 68-year-old Kia driver was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition.
Eight other people suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
White and Coates were taken into custody at the scene.
Their arraignments were pending Monday.
