OK, New Jersey, soon it may be your turn to go to pot

- Shayna Jacobs

Pot smokers are getting closer to being able to light up legally in New Jersey.

Gov. Phil Murphy and New Jersey General Assembly leaders have reached a deal that would legalize the use of marijuana for residents taking the drug for nonmedical purposes, according to a state senator.

Sen. Nicholas Scutari told NBC News 4 on Monday some of the terms have been hammered out while others, including how to tax and regulate sales, are under discussion. A vote on the bill could come as soon as early March, he said.

A poll released Monday showed a majority of New Jersey residents favor the legalization of pot. Monmouth University researchers found 62% of adults in the state “support legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use.”

“We find widespread public support for legalizing marijuana, but the devil is in the details,” Patrick Murray, who heads the university’s polling center, said. “A question mark for some ... is whether the state can set up an adequate regulatory system.”
