Foles will be free as of March 13
If you want Nick Foles, go get him.
Eagles GM Howie Roseman announced at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis on Wednesday that the team will not slap the franchise tag on Foles. That makes Philly's unlikely Super Bowl hero from two seasons ago an unrestricted free agent as soon as the new NFL year begins on March 13.
“He deserves an opportunity to lead his own team,” Roseman told ESPN.
The Eagles had toyed with the idea of tagging Foles and then working out a trade so he wouldn't leave for nothing.
Philadelphia has already named Carson Wentz the starting quarterback for next season.
Foles, 30, came off the bench during the 2017 season after Wentz tore his ACL late in the season and helped lead the Eagles on a magical playoff run that ended with the franchise's first Super Bowl title.
Foles earned Super Bowl LII honors after throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns — he also added a receiving TD on the infamous ‘Philly Special' play — as the Eagles outgunned Tom Brady and the Patriots, 41-33.
When Wentz — the second overall pick in the 2016 draft and on the last year on his team-friendly rookie contract in 2019 — went down again last season, Foles again stepped up and went 4-1 down the stretch to get the Eagles back into the playoffs. The Eagles upset the Bears in the wild card round before losing the falling week to the top-seeded Saints.
But the 26-year-old Wentz is the future in Philly.
Foles is now the top free agent QB on the market in a underwhelming group that includes Teddy Bridgewater, Tyrod Taylor and ex-Jet Ryan Fitzpatrick.
