A strip of Cardi B’s past in film
Cardi B worked as a stripper before making it big — and now the Grammy-winner is returning to that world in her first film role.
The “Bodak Yellow” singer (inset left) has joined the cast of “Hustlers,” along with Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer and Julia Stiles, it was announced Tuesday. Mercedes Ruehl has also been announced as having joined the cast, while Mette Towley and Trace Lysette are in negotiations.
The film, which stars Jennifer Lopez (right inset) and Constance Wu, centers on a collection of former strip club employees. According to Deadline, they team up to “get their revenge on wealthy, drunken and abusive clients by maxing out their credit cards after they’ve passed out.”
“Hustlers” was inspired by Jessica Pressler’s popular 2015 New York magazine article, “The Hustlers at Scores.”
Writer-director Lorene Scafaria says she’s excited to work with the “powerhouse” cast.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with this dynamic group of women,” she said. “We’re grateful to have assembled such a powerhouse cast and can’t wait to start filming at the end of the week.”
“Hustlers” was initially set to be released through Annapurna, though those plans were scrapped due to creative differences. The project was picked up by STX in October. Producers for the film include Lopez, Academy Award nominee Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.
“Hustlers” is set to begin filming Friday in New York.
