I’ll fix you, Mexico! It’s my big tariff
President Trump announced Thursday he’s slapping tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico as punishment for what he described as the country’s failure to combat “chaos” on the U.S. southern border.
Trump said in a tweet that a 5% tariff on all Mexican imports will start June 10.
If the immigration “crisis persists,” Trump said in a White House statement, he will bump the levy to 10% on July 1, 15% on Aug. 1, 20% on Sept. 1 and 25% on Oct. 1.
“Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25% level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory,” Trump said without specifying how such progress would be measured.
The potentially economically crippling tariffs — which will be paid by American consumers of Mexican goods — are allowed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, Trump said.
In his statement, Trump painted the unprecedented number of migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border with a broad and fear-mongering brush.
“Gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, and illegal drugs and narcotics of all kinds are pouring across the Southern Border and directly into our communities,” he said. “Thousands of innocent lives are taken every year as a result of this lawless chaos. It must end NOW!”
The tariffs could have a devastating effect on the U.S. economy, as many businesses depend heavily on Mexican imports.
Companies in Mexico would likely raise their export prices in response to the sharp levies, which could leave American consumers on the hook for the increases.
Democrats pointed out that bleak irony in response to Trump’s mass tariff announcement.
“Tariffs are taxes,” tweeted Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii). “The President is unilaterally imposing the equivalent of a 17 billion dollar sales tax, which sounds not very free market-y to me but I guess MAGA is like a wand you wave to make all of your previous principles disappear.”
