Maniac attacks an MTA worker

An emotionally disturbed man walloped an MTA worker at a Harlem subway station in a caught-on-video assault, police said Sunday.

The man (inset) stood on the uptown platform of the 145th St. Nos. 2 and 3 station at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday and shouted at a group of MTA workers on the downtown side, police sources said.

He then left the station, walked across the street, and reentered the station on the downtown side, which was closed for maintenance.

The man ducked under red tape stretched across the downtown turnstiles, and made his way to the platform to confront the workers.

After what looks like an exchange of words, the man bashed a 59-year-old MTA worker in the face, the video shows.

Then he walked back through the turnstiles, ducked beneath the red tape stretched across them and left.

Police describe the attacker as Hispanic, in his 40s and bald with a goatee, wearing a redand-black track suit and redand-black sneakers.

“This is why we need a greater law enforcement presence in the subway. Transit worker assaults are a major problem that need to be addressed. Now,” said Transport Workers Union Local 100 President Tony Utano said.

Last year, 101 transit workers were assaulted, and more than 2,300 were harassed on the job, Local 100 says.

The harassment incidents include 156 instances in which someone spat on a transit worker, the union said.

One of the more bizarre attacks on transit workers was in April, when a man threw urine at a female train conductor at the Brook Ave. No. 6 station in the Bronx.

About an hour later, the same man tossed urine at a female bus driver on the Grand Concourse in Mott Haven.

Local 100 notes that a conductor was stabbed in the Bronx on April 21, and a female train operator was punched in the face in Brooklyn on May 6.
