“Please refrain from objecting,” Jackson told him. “It makes it very difficult for me to rule on the objections your lawyer makes — I don’t know where it’s coming from.”

QI want to apply for citizenship. Because I’m earning less now, I am trying to modify my child support requirements. I am paying as much as I can. Can I apply now, or must I wait until my child support requirements are modified?
A.K., Orlando
AYou can apply now if you are confident you will be up-todate with your payments at the time of your citizenship interview. It’s taking a year to two years for
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services to process naturalization applications. If you are in full compliance with your requirements at the time of your interview, you can naturalize.
Failure to pay required child support shows a lack of the good moral character required to naturalize. You’ll need to bring a copy of your child support court order or agreement and proof of compliance to your interview. Proof of compliance may be canceled checks or money orders or, if you are paying in cash, an affidavit from the child’s caretaker.
QMy mother lives in Mexico and she’s in poor health. How can I get her permission to come to the United States for medical care? Rosario, Fort Worth, Texas
AA U.S. consul can issue a visitor’s visa to someone coming to the United States for medical treatment. An applicant must get a doctor to provide the diagnosis and prognosis and the length and nature of the treatment and evidence that the same treatment isn’t available in the applicant’s country or a neighboring country. They must also show the ability to pay for medical treatment without relying on U.S. government assistance.
Getting a visitor’s visa can be difficult for Mexicans and others coming from developing countries. An alternative is humanitarian parole. Humanitarian parole is available to individuals not eligible for a visa, but who have an urgent need to come to the United States. USCIS grants humanitarian parole in especially deserving cases only.
To apply for humanitarian parole, your mother must file Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, and Form I-134, Affidavit of Support (signed by you or a close relative). Include the same documentation as for a medical-need visitor’s visa.
