A hero’s sendoff: First responder Detective Luis Alvarez was laid to rest Wednesday at a crowded Queens funeral Mass, after losing his fight against cancer — brought on by his service during 9/11 and subsequent

months serving at Ground Zero. Last month, an emaciated Alvarez, 53, appeared before Congress campaigning for permanent legislation to compensate public servants who, like him, put their lives on the line. His son David stated in his eulogy, “before he became an American hero, he was mine. He was my hero.”

Father saves the day: A mental health therapy coordinator kicked into action seconds after arriving home. Rasheen Hill entered his Queens residence to find his 1-year-old daughter Shiloh unresponsive and with blue lips. Following his instincts, Hill performed two cycles of CPR to save his daughter. Although he’s never used it at work, Rasheen’s job requires annual CPR training, which proved handy. By the time first responders arrived, Shiloh was breathing and conscious. Star-spangled celebration: During the day, crowds gathered to watch the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Downing 71 hot dogs in 10 minutes, Joey

Chestnut continued his Fourth of July dominance. In the evening, hundreds of thousands gathered along the East River to watch Macy’s July 4th fireworks display. According to Macy’s, 70,000 shells were launched from 100 points on the Brooklyn Bridge.

(World) Cup of tea: The U.S. women’s soccer team beat England in the World Cup semifinals 2-1. The win came at the eve of Independence Day — and the irony was not missed by Alex Morgan, who mimed “sipping tea” after her winning goal. The U.S. will play the Netherlands on Sunday, with the winner taking home the Cup.
