Out of jail, back to bank robbing

- BY THOMAS TRACY

Robbing banks is back in fashion, so to speak.

A convicted bank robber nicknamed the “Burberry Bandit” for the high-end duds he wore during his capers is being sought in connection with a new round of robberies, officials said Saturday.

Police said Cornell Neilly, 38, is responsible for seven robberies and attempted heists at Chase Bank branches in Greenwich Village and Midtown between June 22 and July 3. He was successful in getting tellers to hand over money at four of the banks, taking in about $10,600, cops said. In each case, he passed a note to the teller demanding money, according to police.

Neilly was released from prison in January after serving time for a spree of similar bank robberies in 2012, officials said. He’s on parole until June 2022, according to state Department of Corrections records. He was arrested on July 12, 2012, after he robbed a bank on Park Ave., his 13th that spring and summer, cops said.

Dubbed the “Burberry Bandit” for his fashionable threads, Neilly would calmly walk into the banks donning designer sunglasses, pass a note to the teller and flee with cash, police said. During several of the robberies, he wore Burberry clothing.

Neilly, who at the time lived in the Amsterdam Houses near Columbus Circle with his mom, never wore the same outfit twice during any of the jobs, cops said.

According to court records, he did two stints in prison on drug convictions before he began robbing banks.

Neilly is black, about 5-feet-8 and 165 pounds. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
