Source: Van Wagenen throws chair in heated meeting

Brodie Van Wagenen reached a boiling point in his first year as a general manager.

Newly minted Mets GM Van Wagenen threw a chair during a coaches’ meeting after the bullpen imploded in the ninth inning of the Mets’ 7-2 loss to the Phillies on Friday night at Citi Field, according to a source that confirmed a published report.

Van Wagenen called Mets manager Mickey Callaway and the coaching staff for a meeting right after the loss. The first-year general manager reportedly threw a tantrum during the meeting that included assistant GM Allard Baird.

While reporters patiently waited in the press conference room for Callaway to conduct his routine postgame presser, Van Wagenen was reportedly ripping his coaches. Finally, Van Wagenen told Callaway to handle his “f—king press conference.”

Van Wagenen is expected to address the media in Miami following the All-Star break. He has remained silent on the state of the team throughout the Mets’ current homestand; he last spoke publicly to the media on June 24 in Philadelphia. That was when he rearranged his plans in an attempt to smooth over things with the media after Callaway and Jason Vargas directed outbursts at a reporter.

Callaway then breezed into the room and conducted his presser, business as usual. Besides delivering answers about the fresh loss in a low and unhappy tone, Callaway kept his cool and gave no signs of the heated meeting with Van Wagenen and other coaches.

Van Wagenen would not confirm or deny the incident, according to the published report.

Edwin Diaz allowed four earned runs that broke a tied game against the Phillies. Jeurys Familia came on to stop the bleeding in the ninth, but allowed two inherited runners to score in addition to one of his own. The latest bullpen blowup spoiled a solid two-run, seven-inning start from Jacob deGrom.

Van Wagenen acquired Diaz and Robinson Cano from the Mariners in a splashy offseason trade that dealt firstround pick Jarred Kelenic and slugger Jay Bruce to Seattle. The deal has thoroughly backfired on the general manager. Diaz has a 5.67 ERA over 36 relief appearances and Cano is hitting .244 with a pesky quad injury to boot.

The Mets entered Saturday 10 games under .500 and 13 games behind the first-place Braves. New York’s bullpen, at the forefront of the front-office’s headache, holds a 7.24 ERA over its last 24 games.
