Bus hits tractor-trailer, 19 injured
At least 19 people were hospitalized after a commercial bus struck an overturned tractor trailer on a Virginia highway early Sunday.
The tractor trailer was going east on Interstate 64 on Afton Mountain at the Augusta and Nelson county line when the driver lost control, according to the state police. A bus then rammed into the truck, splitting the rig in half.
“The bus ran off the right side of the highway and came to rest against the guardrail,” the state police said.
The crash was caused by “heavy fog and icy road conditions,” according to officials. There were at least seven other minor accidents that took place in the eastbound lanes.
James Proffitt, the driver of the truck, suffered serious but non-lifethreatening injuries, and bus driver Andrew Burruss also suffered nonlife threatening injuries. Both were transported to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.
A total of 15 people were taken to UVA while four others were transported to Augusta Health Medical Center. The injuries ranged from minor to serious.
There were at least 20 passengers on the Virginia-based Silver Lining Tours bus at the time of the crash.
