Devs waive Schneider

Vet goalie could be sent to AHL

-

Veteran goaltender Cory Schneider, one of the main faces for the Devils, has been placed on waivers.

The Devils said on Twitter on Monday the 33-year-old player would be assigned to Binghamton of the AHL if not claimed.

It seems unlikely a team will claim Schneider since it would inherit his $6 million annual salary, which runs through the 2021-22 season. Schneider had battled a hip injury in recent years.

He has an 0-4-1 record in six starts this season and has played only twice in the last 13 games.

The Devils also recalled recently acquired goaltender Louis Domingue from Binghamton to serve as the backup to Mackenzie Blackwood.

SKY BLUE MOVES TO RED BULL ARENA

After a successful two-game experiment in 2019, Sky Blue

FC is making a permanent switch to Red Bull Arena in Harrison for next season. The NWSL team announced the move on Monday.

The team had been playing at Rutgers in a stadium that can only accommodate 5,000 people, and drawing crowds of maybe half that. The team broke its club attendance record in August when nearly 10,000 fans went to watch it play in Harrison.

“This move provides our professional athletes with the top-notch facilities they deserve and gives our growing fanbase increased access via public transit and an enhanced game day experience,” Tammy Murphy said. Murphy's husband, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy, owns the team.

Red Bull Arena, home to MLS's Red Bulls, is a soccerspecific stadium that seats 25,000. Sky Blue traded for New Jersey native Carli Lloyd in 2018 and finished eighth in the nine-team NWSL in 2019.

DUKE GRABS TOP SPOT

Duke is back at No. 1, moving up a spot following a pair of victories last week.

The Blue Devils can thank Evansville for the jump.

Duke moved to No. 1 for the first time this season, receiving 52 first-place votes from a 65member media panel.

The Blue Devils climbed a spot after unranked Evansville pulled off the season's biggest surprise so far by knocking off previous No. 1 Kentucky.

No. 2 Louisville received eight first-place votes and No. 3 Michigan State, the preseason No. 1, had four.
