We’re now caught in Russia’s trap

New Hartford, N.Y.: I am a Baby Boomer. I grew up during the Cold War with air raid drills, fallout shelters, and ridiculous drills in schools where we went out into the hallway and lined up against the wall or hid under our desks to shield ourselves in case of nuclear attack. Why was this necessary at that time? Because America was threatened by the USSR. I can remember my mother reiterating the words spoken by Nikita Khrushchev: “We will bury you.” When I would ask my mother what he meant, she would answer that the USSR probably wouldn’t use weapons because a nuclear war would obliterate them also. They would bury us from within. I’m sure she was thinking of spies because of the times we were in. That only confused me more, but I never forgot his words. But my mom was right, nonetheless.
It’s obvious what Russia is doing and our president and the Republican Party either don’t see, or don’t want to acknowledge the writing on the wall. Watching the impeachment hearings brings back Khrushchev’s words. They’ve been very patient, working in the shadows to undermine our democracy with the infiltration of turmoil. Dr. Fiona Hill said it best and she would know. Our president is playing into their hands. Wake up, America! The Russian leaders are laughing their butts off watching us fight over politics, acts of terrorism against our own people, and unrest throughout the country. Their plan is working beautifully and, unfortunately, our president has not only handed them the keys to make their agenda successful by not facing the fact that they are meddling in our affairs, but he has also given them all shovels to dig our graves.

Own worst enemy
Flushing: Russia, or any other country, is not a threat to our country. It’s the Republican Party that’s the threat because they choose to look the other way and not do their constitutional duty because they are cowards and afraid of Trump and being challenged in a primary. This country is doomed from within!

Good question
Manchester, N.J.: If Trump were ever convicted of any one of his numerous crimes and had to serve jail time, would the Secret Service detail assigned to him as president have the next cell? Alan Berman
The good book
Teaneck, N.J.: The impeachment evidence is pretty clear. We know who the Democrats are and we know who the Republicans are in this partisan atmosphere, even in view of the facts. And despite how this ends with the Senate, the real question is who are we, the American people. We shall know better come Election Day. This reminds me of when Pontius Pilate asked the crowd
who to give freedom to for Passover, and they raucously chose the insurrectionist Barabbas over Jesus. Before he died, Rep. Elijah Cummings would often angrily say while in session, “We’re better than that!” I sure hope so, we really should be by now.

Time to recast
Massapequa Park, L.I.: I think Adam Schiff should be replaced as chairman of the Intelligence Committee by none other than George Costanza of “Seinfeld.” After all, it’s a “show about nothing.”

Self sacrifice
Palisades Park, N.J.: America is going down in the flames created by and fueled by Donald Trump. All the Republicans in Congress know it but they are cowardly lining up to pass the fuel to him. That is except for Mitt Romney. He had the courage to stand up for America and say what had to be said about the president’s efforts to bring America down. The Democrats are telling it like it is because they have nothing to lose by standing up to the president. However, Romney risked being ostracized from his party. But, unlike the cowardly Republicans that are now in our government, he chose America’s best interest over his own. I’m sure that Ronald Reagan, where ever he is, is giving Romney his blessings while he is frowning as he looks at what is happening to his party. Gary DiMora
Power couple
Manhattan: I agree with Voicer Rob Callen. Amy Klobuchar really stood out in the debate as someone with sound ideas and proposals, and a way to pay for them. She has what it takes to beat Trump in any debate and election. Maybe the country wasn’t ready for a woman president before but we sure are now — especially after three years of Trump in the White House. Klobuchar is the right woman at the right time for president. I think if she picks a strong running mate, maybe, Cory Booker, she will be unstoppable.

Borelli’s call to action
Bellerose: So, “conservative” Councilman Joe Borelli is now encouraging activists to stage obscene rallies against teachers (“Social justice warriors’ silence on schools,” Nov. 17). Kind of like his hero, President Trump, asking Russia to find Hillary Clinton’s emails. Robert Berger
Gone and forgotten
Brooklyn: Fifty years ago, on Nov. 22, 1963, I was in bed convalescing after childbirth and watching TV when the program was suddenly interrupted with the horrific announcement that President Kennedy had been shot and killed. I’ll never forget the image of Walter Cronkite’s face and tremulous voice as he delivered the news. Yet this week on Nov. 22, 2019, on the anniversary of an event of such significance in our nation’s history, not one word. Yet the entire page three is dedicated to a new movie. How quickly they forget.

Little Ferry, N.J.: Voicer Thomas Sarc seems to be missing the story. I’m sure not even the most left-leaning bleeding heart liberal is shedding a tear
GETTY over Jeffrey Epstein’s demise. But if you believe that he killed himself, I have some oceanfront property in Montana I’d love to sell you. Is it possible that the guards simply “forgot” to check on him all night? How can it be that someone who already attempted suicide was in a room by himself? These are not coincidences. These things didn’t happen because of ineptitude. There’s way more going on. Thomas Rogan
Easy way out
Flushing: To Voicer Thomas Sarc: The victims of Jeffrey Epstein did not receive justice just because he is dead. Epstein was the epitome of a coward. He killed himself and therefore does not have to live out his life behind bars. Even if he was murdered, he still got away easy. His victims deserve better.

Taking initiative
Davie, Fla.: Like Voicer Skip Trivigino, I, too, missed the “Mutts” comic strip. So much so that I subscribed to their daily email. Now I get the daily “Mutts” strip in my inbox. You can too. Alan Abriss
