Calif. bar, site of mass shooting, to reopen

The Borderline Bar & Grill will rise again after it was the scene of a mass shooting in southern California last year, its owners said in a long-awaited message Thursday.

“We have decided to reopen the bar. We’re gonna reopen the Borderline Bar & Grill,” coowner Brian Hynes said in a Facebook video.

“It’s gonna take a little while,” he cautioned, but “we will work towards it best we can.”

It was the night of Nov. 7, 2018, that a 28-year-old ex-Marine with post-traumatic stress disorder opened fire inside the packed venue in Thousand Oaks, killing 12 people before turning the gun on himself.

The tragedy sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community who flocked to the country western-themed bar for its live music and linedancing events.

Co-owner Troy Hale joined Hynes in the video and revealed they would open another location in Agoura Hills to serve customers in the meantime.

Called the “BL Dancehall and Saloon,” the new location will be the Borderline’s “temporary home” during the “long rebuilding process,” he said.

“We’re bringing everything back that made the actual Borderline home, feel like home,” Hale said. “Everything you loved about Borderline, we’re bringing to this new location.”

The new location will feature a custom built dance floor, game room, stage for live performances and outside patio bar.

“I am so happy to hear,” fan Bobbie June Black said in a reply post. “I spent 12 years dancing the night away. Best time of my life. I’m so happy that they are reopening and building new ones. We can’t let the bad guys win.”
