Gettleman’s fault, dream AFC playoff matchup and losing Danny Aiello...

-

● There is only one compelling reason for John Mara to allow Dave Gettleman to stay after this season if Pat Shurmur goes:

If Mara believes Gettleman is right about Daniel Jones.

Gettleman doesn’t get to stick a flag on the hill because of Saquon Barkley. This is all about Jones. Maybe you’re convinced that the kid from Duke is some sort of surefire future NFL star, and the heir to Eli, off what you’ve seen since that comeback against the Bucs.

I’m sure not.

● At least Jones has shown the shown potential to get the Giants out of this.

Now show me where Gettleman has.

Show me the playmakers on offense apart from Barkley, who’s looked like just another back since he got hurt.

Show me the young core of a defense like the ones the Giants had when they were still winning Super Bowls.

The bottom line here, with a two-win team, is that this isn’t all

Shurmur’s fault. Gettleman’s resume in the league goes back nearly 35 years.

Somehow there’s still this notion that he was some sort of crucial front office figure with the Giants when they were still winning Super Bowls.

Only he wasn’t.

Now they’re going to put him in charge of another rebuild, on top of the one with Shurmur?

● It took one win over the Warriors — who are as bad as the Knicks this season — for me to start getting the impression that Mike Miller is the second coming of Red Holzman.

● I know the President’s Cup is a made-for-TV competition, and will never be the Ryder Cup.

But it was still fun to watch this week, and in primetime, from Melbourne.

Boy, it sure didn’t take long for the Boston Red Sox to turn into

Chaim Bloom’s old team in St. Petersburg, did it?

I saw somebody on ESPN suggesting the other day that Dak Prescott is a better quarterback than Aaron Rodgers these days. Yeah.

Go with that.

Or go bowling.

● Doesn’t Sen. Lindsey Graham make you think he wants a pony from the president for Christmas?

You know what would be really something in the AFC playoffs?

If it turns out to be last year’s hot kid, Patrick Mahomes, against this year’s hot kid, Mr.

Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. You think Michigan is starting to think they got the Other Harbaugh.

● I heard there was a Cespedes sighting the other day and had to lie down until the dizzy spell passed.

Knicks fans should hope that someday Steve Mills gets as good at building a real basketball team as he is at keeping his job with Dolan.

● Oh man, we lost a great one the other day when we lost Danny Aiello.

He was a wonderful actor, he was a wonderful singer, he was wonderful company, in addition to being the beloved uncle of my pal, Michael Kay.

He knocked it out of the park for Spike in “Do the Right Thing.”

He did the same in “Moonstruck.”

And every time he got up in a saloon and sang a Sinatra song.

We all called him Uncle Danny, because of Mike Kay.

So R.I.P to Uncle Danny today. The city just got a lot less fun.
