Van hits & kills woman in Queens

- BY NICHOLAS WILLIAMS AND THOMAS TRACY

A Queens woman was fatally struck and dragged by a van while crossing the street a block away from her home, police said Saturday.

Yulan Lu, 68, was in the crosswalk on 58th Road near the Queens Midtown Expressway in Maspeth about 5:30 p.m. Friday when a white 2020 Chevrolet Express van making a right turn onto 58th Road plowed into her, according to police and surveillance video recovered from the scene.

Lu was knocked to the ground and fell under the van, which ran over her and dragged her for several feet before stopping, the video shows.

She was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital with a serious head injury, but could not be saved.

“I saw a older man crying as the ambulance was there. I thought it was her husband,” said one woman, who did not want to be named.

Driver George Guzman, 33, remained at the scene. Cops charged him with failing to yield to a pedestrian and failing to exercise due care.

“I don’t think the driver saw her,” said the witness. “He may have felt that he hit something and eventually stopped.”

Neighbors were shocked to hear about Lu’s passing, and said the woman and her family mostly kept to themselves.

“I was hoping she made it,” one man said, visibly shaken by the news of her death. “It’s so sad, it’s carelessness. They have to do something here.”

Lu’s death caps a bloody week for pedestrians navigating city streets.

On Tuesday morning, a 10-year-old Queens boy was fatally struck by a city garbage truck. Later Tuesday, a 68year-old woman walking with a cane was hit and killed by a cement truck in Brooklyn.
