‘Rape room’ gastropub is outta biz

- BY GRAHAM RAYMAN

The Spotted Pig, a West Village gastropub that was allegedly the site of sexual harassment and assaults on nearly a dozen of its female employees, has closed.

Chef Tony Nassif confirmed the closure of the trendy eatery, which was on W. 11th St. near Hudson St. and popular with celebrities, in an Instagram post Monday.

“I can’t believe it’s over,” Nassif wrote. “This place changed the game for gastropubs. First pub to get a Michelin star in the world and made an impact on me like no other.”

In 2017, 11 women alleged that owner Ken Friedman sexually harassed them, sometimes in an upstairs VIP area infamously nicknamed the “rape room.”

Celebrity chef Mario Batali, a friend of Friedman’s, was accused of assaulting a woman there who was passed out. Batali denied the allegations, but he stepped away from his restaurants after several women, including former employees, accused him of sexual harassment in 2017.

Friedman agreed this month to pay $240,000 plus a share of profits to come to 11 former workers who accused him of sexual harassment, state Attorney General Letitia James announced. Friedman also stepped down from the Spotted Pig.

James’ office said Friedman forcibly kissed the women, pressured them to send nude photos and created a hostile environment that violated city and state human rights laws.

Friedman apologized but did not admit to wrongdoing in the settlement. “This is a sad day,” Friedman told Bloomberg News in a text message Monday about the restaurant’s closing down. “An iconic special place is gone. There will never be another place like it again.”
