Corey demands $2B for NYCHA
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson wants Albany to show NYCHA the money.
He led a small crowd in chants of the famous “Jerry Maguire” quote at a rally outside City Hall on Monday.
“The city can’t do it on our own,” the Manhattan Dem said after citing a litany of public housing woes that need fixes. “We put up a lot of money — we should put up more money — but we need a state partner to put up money with us. So what do public housing residents need? Money.”
“Show us the money!” Johnson, who’s gearing up for a mayoral run, and a few dozen supporters shouted.
They were calling for the state to invest $2 billion in the city’s beleaguered public housing in this year’s budget.
Pols and activists called out Gov. Cuomo for neglecting to include any new funding for NYCHA in the budget he proposed last month.
“NYCHA residents … are sick of hearing promises,” Johnson said. “They want money. They want leadership. They want real management and they want results.”
Cuomo’s “executive budget” — traditionally an opening shot in negotiations with the Legislature — included $100 million that had already been promised NYCHA through a federally mandated agreement to fix boilers and elevators. Albany is expected to put an increased burden on municipalities, including the Big Apple, as the state faces a roughly $6 billion shortfall.
A Cuomo spokeswoman said, “While local governments and the feds have the financial obligation to make these investments, no governor has done more to invest in housing and homelessness . ... New Yorkers can spot a politician looking for a headline a mile away.”
