Deranged man slashes woman on Bronx train

- BY BEN MILLER AND THOMAS TRACY

A young woman was slashed in the face by an unhinged stranger during an unprovoked attack on a Bronx subway train, officials said Thursday.

Ramia Begum, 19, riding a Pelham Bay-bound No. 6 train home from her job at a Harlem Dunkin’ Donuts when the assailant, began to act erratically around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

“He was a very scary man,” the wounded woman said at her Bronx home Thursday, sporting a jagged scar from her forehead to her left ear.

Begum said when she got on the train at the 125th St. station the attacker was already on the train.

The stranger wouldn’t stop staring at her. Feeling uncomfortable, she moved to another train car but he followed her.

He then lunged at her with a sharp object, slashing her forehead (inset) and hand as the train entered the Brook Ave./E. 138th St. station.

“He attacked my head,” Begum said. “I hold my face and [he] attacked my hand.”

The stranger continued with his assault even after Begum fell to the ground. “He kicked my head,” she said. The attacker didn’t say a word as he cut her, police said.

Witnesses told police that the suspect fled the station moments after the assault. Concerned straphangers rushed to the woman’s aid.

“All of us tried to help her the best way we could,” said one good Samaritan, who declined to give his name. “I tried to cover the cut and tried to suppress the cut from her bleeding out until the ambulance came.”

Begum was in shock and couldn’t stop crying, the good Samaritan remembered.

“She was hysterical because of what happened to her,” he said. “No one should have to go through that and endure that at all.”

“I really hope they catch the guy for doing this to her, because it was so wrong,” he added.

Medics took Begum to Lincoln Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Resting at home and trying to put the vicious assault behind her, Bagum said she didn’t know if she would take the subway again.

“Before, I am not really scared,” she said. “Next time, I am too scared”

Cops are looking for the attacker, who appeared to be between 20 and 30 and was wearing blue jeans and black sneakers.

Police released surveillance video of the suspect Thursday in the hopes that someone recognizes him.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
