NEED G.I. HELP NOW
Blaz begs Don for military aid
Mayor de Blasio sounded a dire note Thursday while pleading for the U.S. military help on the coronavirus outbreak and announcing 26 deaths — more than double the toll from just a day earlier.
“We alone, even if we’re the greatest city in the world — and we are — we alone cannot solve this crisis,” Hizzoner said at a news conference. “We will need the help of the federal government.
“If the federal government does not do all in its power immediately, it’s as simple as this: there will be a lot more people who get sick who didn’t need to get sick and there will be people who die who didn’t need to die.”
The city had 3,954 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of Thursday morning, according to the mayor.
While slamming President Trump for letting down his native city, de Blasio called on the feds to amp up the supply chain and send in the military.
“In our military are extraordinary, trained professionals used to dealing with the most difficult circumstances,” said Hizzoner. “And yet they are at their bases right now all over this country. They are not at the front …
This is a different kind of war, and the front is right here.”
On Wednesday, he answered in the affirmative when asked if he wants the military to do functions like setting up field hospitals in locations such as the Javits Center.
Eight publicly run hospitals have coronavirus testing up and running, with two more to become operational soon, de Blasio said. That’s in addition to testing underway at seven of the city’s Gotham clinics and plans for five new drive-through centers.
