strain.

He then played two games of the ALCS against the Astros before suffering a right quad strain in the Yankees' seasonending series.

Stanton slashed .288/.403/ .492 with three home runs and 13 RBI in those 18 regular-season games. He hit .230 with two RBI in 13 postseason atbats.

SURGERY FOR SALE

When the Red Sox start the 2020 season, whenever that is, Boston will open without their ace.

According to the team, Sox southpaw Chris Sale will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow this Friday.

Last year, Sale posted a career-worst 4.40 ERA while battling elbow trouble, leading the team to shut him down in August. Though the team was reportedly hopeful that he would avoid Tommy John, the southpaw's rough 2019 was only a precursor to his health issues the following year.

Sale, 30, is in the first year of a five-year, $145 million dollar extension. Due to the coronavirus pandemic that has all professional sports on pause, the MLB season is suspended for at least another eight weeks.

Right now, the Red Sox' season, already an expected transition year, hinges more on the country curbing a global health pandemic than, say, Eduardo Rodriguez' repeating his solid 2019.

The team made the announcement on Thursday, two weeks after saying Sale had a flexor strain near the elbow. At the time, the Red Sox hoped Sale would avoid the operation that usually requires a full year to recover from.

Sale is 109-73 in 10 major league seasons is entering the second season of a six-year, $160 million contract. After helping the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series, he went 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 25 starts last year, his fewest wins and starts and highest ERA in a full season since 2012.

GAMES CALLED OFF

MLB called off what was to have been its first two regularseason games in Mexico City, along with a three-game series in Puerto Rico because of the coronavirus.

Arizona and San Diego were to have played on April 18 and 19 at Mexico City's Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium, a 20,000capacity ballpark that opened in March 2019.

The Mets and Miami had been scheduled to play a threegame series at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan from April 28-30.
