You lied, Bloomy
Ex-campaign workers, in wage rage, sue
Four ex-organizers for Mike Bloomberg sued his failed presidential campaign Monday, alleging they and hundreds of other staffers were tricked into taking their jobs with false promises of being paid through the election.
Donna Wood, who worked for Bloomberg in Florida, argued in a lawsuit that the campaign breached its contract by dismissing her last week in order to donate its remaining $18 million to the Democratic National Committee.
Wood said she and other campaign workers had been promised pay and benefits through November and that the early dismissal left “them and their families potentially uninsured in the face of a global pandemic.” She also alleges that she and other staffers were cheated out of overtime pay.
Wood’s lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Manhattan, is seeking classaction status.
Another three staffers — Alexis Sklair, Sterling Rettke and Nathaniel Brown — filed a similar suit, also in Manhattan Federal Court, alleging “thousands of people relied” on Bloomberg’s pledge to pay them through November’s general election.
“But the promise was false,” the three ex-staffers charged. “Now thousands of people who relied on the Bloomberg campaign’s promise are left to fend for themselves.”
A Bloomberg spokeswoman countered that the campaign paid staff “wages and benefits that were much more generous than any other campaign this year.”
“Given the current crisis, a fund is being created to ensure that all staff receives healthcare through April, which no other campaign has done,” the spokeswoman said. “And many field staff will go on to work for the DNC in battleground states, in part because the campaign made the largest monetary transfer to the DNC from a presidential campaign in history to support the DNC’s organizing efforts.”
Bloomberg dropped out of the Democratic race after only managing to win the American Samoa caucuses on Super Tuesday despite pouring more than $600 million into campaign ads and organizing efforts for the March 3 elections.
He has since endorsed Joe Biden.
