Stars give $2 million to fight bug
The foundations of two of music’s biggest superstars are hitting the right note during the coronavirus pandemic.
Rihanna and Jay-Z’s foundations are each donating $1 million to aid the response efforts in New York City and Los Angeles.
Jay-Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation and Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation announced their combined $2 million donation on Tuesday, saying the funds will help the children of first responders and health care workers, as well as the incarcerated, the elderly and undocumented workers.
“There are a number of populations who are especially vulnerable during this pandemic — those who are undocumented, incarcerated, elderly and homeless, as well as children of frontline health workers and first responders,” said Justine Lucas, the executive director of Rihanna’s (inset) foundation.
“Now more than ever, we need to support organizations prioritizing the health and rights of these individuals.”
The $2 million will support initiatives from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Fund for Public Schools, the Mayor’s Fund for L.A. and the New York Immigration Coalition.
Among the causes that the money will go toward include providing children with day care, food, supplies and learning materials, and supporting food delivery to the elderly and to people experiencing homelessness.
“In times of crisis it is imperative that we come together as one community to ensure that everyone, especially the most vulnerable, has access to critical needs: shelter, health, nutrition and education,” said Gloria Carter, CEO of the Shawn Carter Foundation. “The only way to get through this pandemic is with love and action.”
Last month, Rihanna’s foundation donated $5 million to different groups to help vulnerable and marginalized communities during the fight against coronavirus.
