Don’s endless obsession with Obama
President Trump called on Barack Obama on Thursday to testify before Congress about “the biggest political crime” in history, taking his baseless smear campaign against the former commander-in-chief to an erratic new level.
Apparently eager to steer attention away from his administration’s widely criticized coronavirus response, Trump said that, if he were a congressman or senator, his first order of business would be to bring in the 44th president for an under oath grilling.
“The first person I would call to testify about the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA, by FAR, is former President Obama. He knew EVERYTHING,” Trump tweeted.
Tagging Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Trump added, “Just do it. No more Mr. Nice Guy. No more talk!”
Graham, usually hardpressed to break with Trump, quickly smacked down Trump’s Twitter demand.
“I don’t think now’s the time for me to do that. I don’t know if that’s even possible,” Graham told reporters on Capitol Hill. “I understand President Trump’s frustration, but be careful what you wish for.”
A spokeswoman for Obama did not return a request for comment.
Obama has faced a barrage of wildly conspiratorial accusations in light of revelations that a handful of top-ranking officials in his administration learned of ex-Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn’s shady contacts with a Russian diplomat earlier than previously known.
The officials who learned of Flynn’s actions included former Vice President Joe Biden.
No information has emerged to suggest there was anything illegal about the way in which Biden and the other Obama officials found out about Flynn’s communications with the Kremlin diplomat during the 2016 presidential transition period.
