Nearly 1,700 arrests across U.S.
Nearly 1,700 people have been arrested across the country during volatile, often violent, and widely destructive anti-police brutality protests in the death of George Floyd.
During a three-day stretch that began Thursday, arrests were made in 22 cities.
Many protested peacefully, while others started fires, broke windows and inflicted other damage in cities including New York, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Philadelphia. Many, including Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Atlanta, put curfews into effect.
Atlanta police arrested 70 people from Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to local news station WAGA-TV. In New York, NYPD officers made 345 arrests as of early Sunday following a second consecutive night of protests in the city, sources told the Daily News. Thirtythree officers were injured.
Floyd, an African-American man, was killed while in police custody last Monday in Minneapolis.
The arrests since then have included media members.
On Friday, three CNN journalists were arrested during live coverage of the Minneapolis protests. They were released the same day. Also, Tom Aviles, a cameraman for Minnesota news station WCCO, was taken into police custody after getting hit by a rubber bullet Saturday night. He also was later released.
