Retailers prepare for worst

-

New York is boarding itself up.

Major retailers, including Apple stores in Brooklyn to Macy’s flagship department store in Manhattan, are preparing for the worst as protests over the police killing of George Floyd show little sign of dying down.

Workers erected plywood Sunday around the Apple store on Flatbush Ave., a symbol of the dramatic development in downtown Brooklyn in recent years.

One of the store’s windows was broken Saturday night, but it escaped serious damage or looting during angry protests at the nearby Barclays Center. Apple also boarded up its store in Williamsburg.

In Manhattan, a similar operation was underway to protect Macy’s flagship department store in Herald Square.

Workers also boarded up nearby stores including Tiffany’s, Kith and Ritual.

Some stores in SoHo were looted during the protests Saturday.

In Brooklyn, protest leaders linked arms Saturday night to prevent looters from getting into the Target store in the Atlantic Terminal Mall just a stone’s throw away from the Apple Flatbush Ave. store.
