Maloney does not have COVID
Manhattan Rep. Carolyn Maloney found out that she does not have coronavirus, ending a nearly week-long scare, the Daily News has learned.
Maloney chief of staff Andrew Lowenthal announced the negative test results in a staff-wide Saturday morning email obtained by The News.
“The congresswoman learned last night that she tested negative for COVID!!” Lowenthal wrote. “Thank you all so much for your positive outlook and hard work all week!”
The 74-year-old Democrat got tested Monday at a Manhattan hospital and started self-quarantining after writing in a tweet that she felt “unwell.”
Maloney has a history of bronchitis and was hospitalized after fainting during a press conference in Manhattan last October, which added a layer of alarm as she spent five days waiting for the results.
The rep. canceled a number of events, including two debates with her primary challengers.
The 14-term lawmaker still made virtual appearances at a handful of congressional hearings.
She also briefly appeared via video-stream at a Wednesday night campaign fund-raiser.
Suraj Patel, one of Maloney’s progressive primary challengers, took issue with her appearing at a fund-raiser, but not the debates.
“At a time when millions are marching for a new politics, Rep. Maloney used COVID as an excuse to skip speaking with voters,” Patel said. “It confirms what we knew about her priorities.”
One of the debates Maloney didn’t take part in was pushed back to Monday. A source said Maloney expects to participate.
