Shot in head and fighting for her life
A 30-year-old woman was clinging to life after she was shot in the head outside a Brooklyn housing project early Sunday, cops said.
The woman and a man she was with were both hit outside the Cooper Park Houses on Frost St. near Morgan Ave. in East Williamsburg about 4:15 a.m., police said.
The woman was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.
The 31-year-old man with her was shot in the elbow, left hip and left ankle, police said. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens in stable condition.
Concerned neighbors said the shooting started at a barbecue, an activity not allowed on New York City Housing Authority property due to coronavirus.
“I heard them all last night. Dancing and hollering. They had food all lined up. No masks. I called my granddaughter and asked her, ‘Should I call the police?’ And she said ‘No, Grandma.’ But then people ended up getting shot,” said Eloise Cain, 87.
“Next time, I’m calling,” she added.
No arrests have been made.
Two miles away, a 24year-old man was shot twice in the right thigh while a 21-year-old woman was shot in the right knee at the Tompkins Houses in BedfordStuyvesant at 3:23 a.m. on Sunday. They were rushed to Kings Country Hospital, where they were expected to survive, cops said.
The shootings come as gun violence surges across the city, up 86.3% for the past 28 days compared with the corresponding period last year, police records show.
Forty-one people were shot citywide since Friday, three of them fatally, cops said Sunday afternoon.
Gun violence for the year is up 20% so far, with 605 shootings compared with 503 incidents by this point last year, police said.
