Woman dies in Brooklyn mowdown
A Brooklyn woman who worked as a baby-sitter to help support her family in Ukraine was fatally struck in a wild chain reaction crash, and the speeding hit-and-run driver was charged with manslaughter after he ran away from the horrifying scene, police said Monday.
Mohammed Nasim, 25, was racing south in a black 2015 KIA Optima on Ocean Ave. in Midwood in the turn lane when he blew through a red light at Avenue J about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
He slammed into a 2015 Lexus sedan that had the green light and was heading east on Avenue J, according to cops. The impact sent the Lexus flying into Mariya Ursachenko, 58, who was crossing Ocean Ave. in the crosswalk — just down the block from her home — and suffered fatal head trauma.
The KIA went on to hit a 2019 Infiniti SUV before Nasim jumped out of his vehicle and bolted, abandoning his car, police said. He was nabbed by cops not far away a short time later.
Medics rushed Ursachenko (inset) to Maimonides Medical Center, but she could not be saved.
Her roommate of eight years, Micahel Isaac, 61, was stunned.
He said Ursachenko worked as a baby-sitter in Manhattan and sent money back to her native Ukraine to help her daughter and nephews.
“Here,” he said, “she doesn’t have anybody.”
“She was a lovely woman,” Isaac said. “I have only nice things to say about her. The last couple of years, maybe four, she was just sorely unlucky. First, she broke her left arm, then she broke her right arm. Two years ago she had heart surgery.”
The driver of the Infiniti, a 38-year-old man, was not hurt, but the 26-year-old man driving the Lexus was admitted to Coney Island Hospital in stable condition.
Nasim was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, vehicular assault, reckless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian.
