Mahomes, Chiefs agree to 10-year, $503 million deal

- BY CHARLES MCDONALD

Boom.

The Kansas City Chiefs guaranteed that their team will be led by the best quarterback in the NFL for another decade. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes agreed to a 10-year extension that will keep Mahomes in Kansas City until 2031. According to Schefter, Mahomes’ extension is worth $503 million with $477 million in guarantee mechanisms, which allows Mahomes to get out of the deal if the mechanisms aren’t exercised. It’s the largest contract in the history of American sports, eclipsing Mike Trout’s $426.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

Mahomes had two years remaining on his current deal, meaning that his contract will run through the 2031 season. This is the first 10-year contract since Donovan McNabb signed a 12-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002. McNabb played with the Eagles through the 2009 season.

Kansas City signing Mahomes to an extension is not surprising in the slightest, but the length of the deal is rare. The only other player in the league who has a comparable contract length is Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith, who signed an eight year deal in 2014.

In just 31 career starts, Mahomes has won the MVP award (2018), Offensive Player of the Year award (2018), a Super Bowl and was named Super Bowl MVP. He also leads the NFL in touchdown passes over the past two seasons with 76.

Yeah, it’s easy to see why Kansas City felt comfortable giving out such a long deal.

As long as Mahomes continues to play like the best player in the NFL, the Chiefs shouldn’t regret paying a single penny to Mahomes for the next decade. This is the price of greatness and Mahomes is undeniably great.
