Yonkers: Re “Six Catholic schools in Brooklyn diocese to remain closed” (July 10): Dear Cardinal Timothy Dolan, I have finally concluded that I am ashamed to call myself a Catholic. I am completely baffled that you could shut down so many New York Catholic schools at a moment’s notice, leaving children in peril and their parents desperate to find new schools. During this unprecedented moment of coronavirus, the Catholic Church has shown its true colors. It is not about people; it is all about money.

I find it hard to comprehend that you, your staff, and your educators could not work out a plan to close schools over a period of two to four years, which would give parents time to make informed decisions about their children’s education.

I am sure God is looking down in despair on you and your educators, and sees the shame that has been brought to the Catholic religion. When you ask yourself why your churches are empty, and people are turning away from Catholicism, your latest action is just one of many reasons. Joseph F. Greco

Indulgent

Kent, N.Y.: U.S. Catholic churches got $1.4 billion in taxpayer support in coronavirus aid? What an outrage! They don’t pay a dollar in taxes. And some of their past spending has been in the form of payouts to victims of their sexual abuse. Why are we subsidizing them and their behavior? Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? Rob Callen

Pay to pray

Ridgewood, N.J.: Catholic schools, yeshivas and other religious schools should not receive any city, state or federal money. When parents cry over the cost, they should remember that city public schools do not charge for education. Also that NYC does not, cannot, promote one faith over another.

Brooklyn: Re “Two ways to save Catholic schools” (op-ed, July 12): The Catholic Church has to make getting a Catholic education a top priority. Only then can we reverse the trends of declining membership and influence. The church needs to invest more in their schools, and tuition needs to be reduced. To do this, the church must fundraise aggressively. In the Jewish community, religious education is a high priority. Aggressive fund-raising ensures a Jewish education for all who want to get it. I am

sure that there are a lot of wealthy Catholics. They should be educated on how this needs to be a priority. Education is a long-term investment, not a “cost.”

Priority cheque

Manhattan: They are emptying prisons to protect inmates from coronavirus, yet Trump and Betsy DeVos want to open schools on time. Why is this a surprise when 15 states now spend $27,000 more per inmate than they do per student? Edward Drossman

Hill of beans

Staten Island: So, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is so upset that someone has an opinion that is different from hers that she is calling for a boycott of Goya. She obviously is not worried that 4,000 people might lose their jobs. She needs to grow up.

Phyllis O’Callaghan

Worst mayor ever

Lynbrook, L.I.: Does that idiot de Blasio think he is helping race relations by having “Black Lives Matter” painted on the streets? In case he has forgotten, all lives matter. What a waste of money. There are so many people that could be helped with it. And what a spiteful person, painting it in front of Trump Tower. Carol Fuggio

Roller derby

Brooklyn: So, if my friends and I paint “de Blasio Sucks” in the street facing Gracie

Mansion, there would be no repercussions, correct?

Steve Fassano

Tax racket

Manhattan: I wonder how much taxpayer money was spent on that disgusting Fifth Ave. mural. That money could have been used to feed poor people. Wake up! If BLM were real, they would focus on black-on-black crime, fatherless homes and teenage pregnancy.

True hue

Manhattan: All those who are angry and upset at “Black Lives Matter” being painted on NYC streets, we already know how you feel. Stop denying your racism.

Heyward Johnson

Nay!

Marilyn Ringel

Bayside: I am a member of the NYC horse-drawn carriage industry. Mayor de Blasio has viciously targeted my family business to fulfill a political promise. Now, he is trolling our president with graffiti, and proving once again what his priorities are. Our city, which is currently experiencing a huge surge in murders, is apparently last on his list of concerns. The graffiti “Black Lives Matter” indicates a political power structure supporting a group that would “pick winners and losers” based on race and

Marxist theory. I do not feel safe or valuable or wanted in my own city. Eva Hughes

Into the sunset

Brooklyn: Another terrible weekend of the Wild Wild West within NYC, shootings of multiple people, including a 1-year old. Only our mayor is to blame for this trend. He took away anti-crime units and handcuffed the NYPD, so that now they cannot perform their duties without fear of losing their jobs. Incredibly enough, the worst is yet to come because of his incompetence, while the governor sits idly by. Joseph V. Comperchio

Search and de-stroy

Manhattan: I applaud Mayor de Blasio for accomplishing what no foreign power was able to accomplish: destroying New York City.

Brendan Finnegan

Gone too soon

Hallandale Beach, Fla.: I didn’t know Naya Rivera personally, but I admired her as an artist. I’m so devastated by the news — a true talent lost far too soon. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to her family. Paul Bacon

Dark clouds

Scranton, Pa.: Florida Gov. and Trump-toadie Ron DeSantis has no qualms about opening his schools in the fall, explaining that classrooms

BRUCE COTLER FOR NEW YORK DAILY NEWS are no more dangerous than Walmart or Home Depot. If I were a resident of the Sunshine State, I would fear for my survival. In fact, I’d be marching down a Florida street with a sign bearing the name Ron DeSantis, but unscrambled to read “Send Rations.” Vin Morabito

That’s Schu-biz

Greenwood Lake, N.Y.: Re Voicer Joe Kowalczyk’s question, “What does Chuck Schumer actually do?”: That’s a great question. Other than being an obstructionist extraordinaire, the only thing I’ve heard is that it could cost you life and limb to get between him and a news camera. Joe Fioramonti Sr.

Death cult

Utica, N.Y.: A strong case can be made that President Trump and his Republican enablers are guilty of murder in the second degree. They have ignored Vladimir Putin’s bounties on American soldiers in Afghanistan, as well as scientific recommendations regarding COVID-19, leading to more than 138,000 American deaths. Certainly, they have engaged in conduct that has “consciously disregarded the risk of death,” and have demonstrated “a depraved indifference to human life.” Someone needs to bring charges.
