Knife guy pepper-sprayed & shot by N.J. cops
Jersey City police shot and wounded a man who refused to drop his knife after being pepper-sprayed, officials said Saturday.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Friday on Hopkins Ave. near Palisade Ave.
Cops were called to the scene after gett ng a report of a belligerent drunk man. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots from the home, then screams from the man, who was threatening family members with a knife, officials said.
When officers arrived, the suspect still had a knife in his hand. He refused repeated orders to put the weapon down, authorities sa .
Cops pepper-sprayed him, but the suspect lunged at the officers, officials said.
One of the responding officers fired once at the man, hitting him. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, though the extent of his injuries weren’t immediately known.
Cops charged the suspect with second-degree aggrapossession, vated assault and weapons officials said.
His name was not immediately released.
A neighbor told NBC New York that the man is a father of three teenagers, two girls and a boy.
At least one officer was injured in the clash, but was not shot, officials said.
Hudson County prosecutors and the New Jersey attorney general’s office were investigating.
“As is standard protocol, the New Jersey attorney general’s office has been notified and the Hudson County prosecutor’s office is working in conjunction with the state attorney general,” a spokeswoman for the Hudson County Prosecutor said in a statement.
