Predictable Trump slap at Cuomo
President Trump was in attack mode on Tuesday, branding the man who led New York through the worst of the coronavirus pandemic as “a horrible governor.”
“Cuomo killed 11,000 people in nursing homes alone,” Trump tweeted. “Crooked & Incompetent!”
Gov. Cuomo, who eviscerated Trump with an eloquent prime-time speech about the pandemic to the Democratic National Convention, wasted no time hitting back.
He advised Trump to stick to his day job, which is supposed to be running the country and leading the response to COVID-19, not dishing out childish insults on social media.
“You can’t play Americans for fools,” Cuomo wrote. “The truth is defeating you.”
The unseemly backand-forth came after Cuomo delivered an effective performance at the all-virtual DNC.
Echoing his daily press briefings complete with lessthan-creative PowerPoint display, Cuomo told the nation that New York had succeeded in squelching the pandemic because of a firm reliance on data and science.
He accused Trump of putting partisan politics first, and said the nation is paying a heavy price.
“Americans [have] learned a critical lesson — how vulnerable we are when we are divided and how many lives can be lost when our government is incompetent,” Cuomo said.
Trump slammed Cuomo within minutes, reminding his Twitter followers that the governor once sought to curry favor with him by praising the White House coronavirus response as a “terrific accomplishment.”
The president also repeated an anti-Italian slur that he hurled at Cuomo’s younger brother, CNN host Chris Cuomo.
“Cuomo, just like his brother Fredo, has not got a very good memory!” Trump wrote.
