Bronx: At the 50th Precinct’s recent “Build the Block” meeting, the NYPD talked out of both sides of their mouth. They claim their main priority is not quality-of-life concerns, but at the same time, they argued that their ability to address those concerns (like noise complaints) has been impeded by the City Council. Do they want to make quality-of-life issues a priority or not? If it isn’t their main priority, they wouldn’t be bemoaning the fact that they have been stripped of their powers; they’d be pleased, and making an effort to redirect those responsibilities.

The NYPD criticizes other public agencies for failing to do their jobs while also lamenting the fact that they are now burdened with extra obligations as a result. If the NYPD is willing to admit they are working outside their job description in dealing with issues like mental illness, drug addiction and homelessness (which, I’m pleased to hear, they are) then the NYPD should also be willing to work toward shifting those tasks — and funds — toward other departments in order to accurately reflect which departments should and should not be dealing with certain community safety concerns. This is the crux of the “defund NYPD” movement, and it’s actually a bit surprising more police officers don’t support it.

Brine-time

Richmond Hill: We New Yorkers find ourselves in a pickle. Do we demand the return of the stop-and-frisk and the anti-crime unit or do we roll the dice and pray to God that we are not the next victim of gun violence? Of the people shot and killed last week, many were Black or Latino, the same groups that the mayor is trying to protect against racial profiling by the NYPD. Francheisko Perez

De ballot box

Rego Park: Every day I read letters decrying miserable Mayor de Blasio. But let’s not forget that this totally inept man was voted into office. New Yorkers, we have to do better next time. If you think your vote won’t make a difference, this is what happens.

Traitor to his city

Manhattan: Trump retweets “Leave Democrat cities. Let them rot.” Why isn’t “Let them rot” the headline of every New York daily paper today, a defining moment for this presidential administration, like “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD”? That was in 1975, and we’re still alive and kicking. Blackouts, recessions, terrorist attacks, hurricanes; they can bash us, but they can’t destroy this great international,

multicultural American Dream of a city. Real New Yorkers will rebuild. Real Americans don’t abandon their homes and families when the going gets tough. Mike Arsham

Double-take

Kew Gardens Hills: I opened Friday’s Daily News to the editorial page and I was shocked to see an editorial that actually complimented President Trump (“Release the doves,” Aug. 14). Trump was commended for brokering the peace treaty between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. I actually had to turn to the front page to make sure I was reading The News.

Lordy

Mount Vernon, N.Y.: In response to the nurses and doctors lobbying the eviction moratorium to be extended for a year or to cancel rent for a year, what about the landlords? Will you pay the mortgage, taxes, water bills since the landlord will not receive any income? If tenants can be free from rent if the bill is passed, landlords should be free from mortgage payments. Rosemarie Fowles

Make a pledge

West Nyack, N.Y.: Charitable organizations are valuable and fill a significant number of gaps in human needs. However, since the current postmaster general is intent on slowing down the Postal Service, I would call upon all charities to suspend their mail from October until midNovember. My home mailbox is usually clogged with mail from charities that have already received my donations. The USPS will probably be slammed with mail-in ballots for this Election Day! I implore all charities to, please, reduce the load on the USPS!

Demolish

Staten Island: To Voicer Jack Vanasco: First of all, thank you for your service to keep us free. Secondly, I agree with you that the Democrats don’t stop trying to get rid of President Trump. They should be more concerned with the problems of our country, of which we have many. I don’t remember the Republicans being on a vendetta to get rid of President Obama for eight years. Yes, there were some trying times, but not like we have seen for the last four years. I vote for whom I believe will do the best job for my beloved city and country.

Pop. life

Hightstown, N.J.: To Voicer Euclid Carras: It is not our job to play God by lowering the population to what you think is suitable. Yes, wars are senseless and brutal. But so are your “peaceful ways” of population reduction. Abortion is no less brutal.

Name game

Manhattan: Voicer Paul Wagner: There’s a big difference with the “name-calling” you deride (Trump calls people names in a pathetic attempt to build up his insecure ego) and the names the Daily News calls and will continue to call him, which are the truth. The former is shameful, the latter accurate reporting.

Dodge City

Scranton, Pa.: Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium will serve as a polling station in the 2020 election. It may be one of the few things about this year that makes any sense. After all, is there a more appropriately named venue for an election involving a five-time draft dodger?

Manhattan: Thank you for “There’s no egg-scuse” (Aug. 11). The egg industry is barbaric. At hatcheries, live male chicks are tossed into grinding

LUIZ C. RIBEIRO FOR NEW YORK DAILY NEWS machines. Others are suffocated in plastic bags. Most egg-laying hens have a portion of their beaks cut off. This is done without painkillers when they are babies. Otherwise, many hens would peck each other from the madness of being so confined that they can’t even lift a wing. Most hens languish in cages in filthy warehouses that reek of ammonia and feces. Once they’re “spent,” they’re further brutalized during the horrific process of live-shackle slaughter. Any nutrient in an egg can also be found in plant-based foods. For baking, there are many substitutes such as vinegar and baking soda, applesauce, banana and ground flaxseed.

Never forget

Bronx: Columbus caused the death of hundreds of thousands of indigenous people by disease. He was a businessman making money. For shame. Ray Steinberg

Help her help you

Astoria: You think COVID-19 is bad? We are experiencing the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Stop the greed and heal the planet while there is still time. If not, Mother Nature will unleash horrors from which we will not recover.
