Trans lawyer paves way in Brooklyn

- BY SHANT SHAHRIGIAN

Brooklyn civil rights lawyer Alejandra Caraballo’s career has been full of firsts.

At court and in professional conferences, she has often found herself one of the few transgender women working on litigation or pressing for national change.

She recently became the first transgender person on a Brooklyn community board.

Now she has her sights set on the City Council, which could make for another first.

But Caraballo, 29, is taking the potential historic ramifications in stride.

“If I’m the first trans person [on the Council], then that’s fantastic,” she told the Daily News.

“But what I really at the end of the day want to focus on is uplifting the voices of the most marginalized in our community and making sure they actively have a say in what goes on in city government.”

She planned to launch her campaign for the 35th District seat on Tuesday.

The area covers Bedford- Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, Fort Greene and Prospect Heights and is currently repped by term-limited Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo, the Democratic majority leader.

Caraballo (inset) promises a starkly different approach than that of Cumbo, who recently helped Council Speaker Corey Johnson (D-Manhattan) pass a controversial city budget that changed $1 billion in NYPD funding.

Critics said the budget didn’t go far enough in answering activists’ calls to defund and reform the Police Department.

“One of my biggest priorities is defunding the NYPD,” said Caraballo.

“What I’m talking about is meaningful, substantial cuts in terms of head count and actual funding to the NYPD to be redirected towards direct services and legal services.”
