Don is shakin’ and ‘bacon’ as he urges GOP to get stimulus done

- BY DAVE GOLDINER

The president wants his coronavirus stimulus plan — even if he has to break the bank to do it.

President Trump said Thursday that he has instructed his negotiators to go higher than their $1.8 trillion proposal and “come home with the bacon” in talks with congressional Democrats.

“I will (go higher than $1.8 trillion) and the Republicans will, too. Because we like stimulus, we want stimulus, and we think we should have stimulus,” Trump told Fox Business Network.

Trump admitted that he is putting pressure on Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to cut a deal even if he has to make more concessions.

“So far, he hasn’t come home with the bacon,” the president said, a remark that would appear to undercut Mnuchin’s stance in the talks with Democrats.

Trump’s push for a deal amounts to his hope for an economic October surprise before Election Day. It marks his latest flip-flop on the deal after earlier this month instructing negotiators to end the negotiations.

Congressional Republicans make no secret of the fact they are not on board with Trump’s plan. The GOP-held Senate refused for months to consider a House stimulus bill and eventually passed only a puny $350 billion measure.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday he won’t go higher than $500 billion, far less than either Trump or Democrats want.

Even as he demanded a deal, Trump slammed his nemesis House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for packing her $2.2 trillion stimulus proposal with Democratic-friendly pork.

“She’s asking for all sorts of goodies. She wants to bail out badly run Democrat states and cities,” Trump said.

Perhaps letting his guard down, Trump candidly explained why he won’t just take Pelosi’s offer and run.

“(My) pride couldn’t let it happen,” he said.
