He made us sicker
Even before COVID came to America and killed 230,000 people (and counting), Americans’ health was suffering under President Trump. It’s another reason he must be turned out of office. After years of declining, the number of Americans without health insurance grew under this president, who has had the Affordable Care Act in his crosshairs from the start.
After reaching a record low 8.6% under Obama, 29 million Americans, including 4.4 million children, are now uninsured, a rate of 9.2%.
If Trump gets his way, invalidating the health-care law he couldn’t kill legislatively via the courts, those ranks would soar by millions more. And though the president promises to protect people with preexisting conditions, it’s an utterly hollow pledge without a foundation like Obamacare provides.
Under Trump, other trends have been moving in the wrong direction, too. The rate of Americans with high blood pressure is growing, after declining in the first decade of the 21st century. More adults are suffering from ailments like diabetes, asthma, and chronic heart and kidney disease. The U.S. obesity rate hit 42.4% in 2019, a record high.
Official federal data show drug overdose deaths increased 4.6% to 70,980 in 2019, after a slight decline in 2018. Over the 12 months ending March 2020, preliminary data showed drug overdose deaths on track to increase an astonishing 10%, a phenomenon public health officials fear has only worsened since.
The marriage rate, which scientists link to happier, longer and healthier lives, had by 2018 declined to its lowest level in more than 118 years, after stabilizing between 2009 and 2017.
