Finest can now have face hair

- Rocco Parascandola

New York’s Finest can now grow beards — though the fuzz will have limits.

The NYPD has reversed a long-standing policy against whiskers, the Daily News has learned, establishing rules that’ll keep the force from resembling a collection of hipsters or ZZ Top acolytes.

Goatees are not allowed, nor are designer or chin strap beards. Also banned are any “words, images, patterns, logos or designs in their facial hair,” according to a Patrol Guide revision that went into effect Wednesday.

The Patrol Guide also asserts that rules governing other facial hair still apply: no droopy mustaches and no sideburns below the earlobes.

The new policy limits beards to a half-inch in length — though undercover officers can let their facial hair grow longer, as can those who get an exemption based on their religion.

The new rules apply to traffic enforcement and school safety agents.

The policy change doesn’t apply to officers assigned to counterterrorism units and have gas masks as part of their basic equipment.
