CITY COUPLE FOUND LOVE IN SERVING OTHERS

- BY DARYA KOLESNICHENKO AND NOAH GOLDBERG

They found love through God, volunteer work — and poop.

Mark and Tabatha Dixon (above) met this spring at the Bowery Mission

— an organization that serves food and provides services for homeless New Yorkers in Manhattan.

Tabatha had lost her job in commercial real estate due to the pandemic in March and began volunteering at the Bowery Mission full-time. Mark worked there, and the two became friendly.

The relationship blossomed when they were working in close quarters, cleaning the showers, where someone had had an “accident,” according to Tabatha.

“I actually knew that I loved him as we were cleaning poop together off the showers’ floor,” said Tabatha, 31. “I thought, ‘This is my man.’ ”

Mark, 30, was impressed that Tabatha was so ready to do the dirty work. “Seeing someone so vulnerable — cleaning the showers is not the cleanest thing —for me to see that she wasn’t the one waiting for me to do it, I just knew it.”

It was a whirlwind romance, and the couple eloped in August. Now they live in the Financial District.

For the religious couple, loving God and working for less fortunate New Yorkers is what brings them together.

“For me, being able to service the community has always been important. Finding the person who has similar interests isn’t an easy task. I wanted someone who loved to serve, and he has such a serving heart,” said Tabatha.

On Thanksgiving they kept up the serving spirit that spirit, working to help countless homeless New Yorkers in the Lower East Side get meals in the Bowery Mission’s tents.

“It’s such a testament that no matter how bad it gets, you can always findsomething so beautiful in serving. We were able to find each other through that, ” Tabatha said.
