Bx. councilwoman: I want to be beep

- Shant Shahrigian

Getting the Bronx back on its feet as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc will be all about employment, City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson says as she looks to officially launch her campaign for Bronx borough president this week.

The term-limited Democrat plans to unveil a detailed plan focusing on “jobs, jobs, jobs,” among other issues, she told the Daily News on Tuesday.

“The No. 1 thing we have to be very aware of is getting residents back to work,” said Gibson, 41. “We have to get residents back to work.”

She said her plan will include job-creation measures such as getting more contracts to minority- and female-owned businesses, and making sure developers hire union workers for permanent positions.

Gibson touted benefits that came from a controversial project she supported — the 2018 rezoning of the “Jerome Ave. Corridor” — but said the Bronx could have gotten more from the city as it paved the way for redevelopment.

“We could have demanded more and probably gotten more from the [de Blasio] administration,” Gibson said. “We have a sample community benefits agreement … that we typically could use as borough president that will be a platform, a signature item that we will use in all of our negotiations with developers.”

The Bronx has never had a Black or female borough president.

“Every day I wake up, I know that I’m an African-American woman” Gibson said. “But even more than my gender and my race, I want to be a candidate that people can relate to … that they see my track record and my work ethic.”
