Supervisor at killer inn hit with rap

- BY ROCCO PARASCANDOLA

A supervisor at a Queens hotel where three people were shot on New Year’s Day, one fatally, has been criminally charged with creating unsafe conditions, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Tuesday.

Gulshan Gandhi, 68, the overnight front desk supervisor at the notorious Umbrella Hotel, was arrested Monday for criminal nuisance, a misdemeanor.

The Kew Gardens hotel has been a hotbed of violence in recent months and the source of drug and prostitution complaints from area residents, with elected officials rallying outside over the summer.

Officials have said it’s not uncommon for guests to reserve several rooms and throw big parties that get rowdy.

Katz says the hotel, located on Queens Blvd. near 82nd Ave., across the street from the Queens Criminal Courthouse, has been the subject of complaints including assault, rape and sex trafficking.

Gandhi works from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. and was in charge during shootings on July 3 and Aug. 9, prosecutors charge. The victims survived.

“The defendant allegedly — and repeatedly — allowed unsafe gatherings on the premises of the hotel, even after a shooting left bullet holes in its front door,” Katz said. “This hotel has been a danger to the community.”

Gandhi was also in charge when Robert Williams, 20, was shot dead at 1:10 a.m. on New Year’s Day, the city’s first homicide of 2021, Katz said. Two other men were wounded in the shooting.

Police said two groups got into a fight inside the hotel, the violence then spilling outside. Police are looking for four suspects.

The victim was killed the day before his 21st birthday.

After his arrests, Gandhi was given a ticket to appear in court at a later date and released. He could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
