Blaz dumps Trump-tied businesses

- BY SHANT SHAHRIGIAN AND MICHAEL GARTLAND

The city is canceling contracts with the Trump Organization, Mayor de Blasio said Wednesday, citing the commander-in-chief’s incitement of the deadly siege of the U.S. Capitol last week.

“The president incited a rebellion against the United States government that killed five people and threatened to derail the constitutional transfer of power,” de Blasio said in a statement. “The City of New York will not be associated with those unforgivable acts in any shape, way or form, and we are immediately taking steps to terminate all Trump Organization contracts.”

De Blasio said the Trump Organization earns about $17 million a year in profits from its contracts to run two ice skating rinks and a carousel in Central Park as well as a golf course in the Bronx.

After making his initial announcement, de Blasio was bombarded with questions over the timing of the decision, given the fact that elected officials and others have been calling on the city to terminate contracts with Trump’s holdings for years and that Trump has been violating norms for years and has already been impeached on separate grounds.

“We are not going to do business with a criminal organization,” de Blasio said. “If I said to you, ‘Should we do business with the Mafia?’ you’d say ‘No.’ Unfortunately at this point, the Trump Organization is just another organized crime organization.”

The president’s son Eric Trump responded with a threat, saying that the city has “no legal right” to terminate the deals.

“Yet another example of Mayor de Blasio’s blatant disregard for the facts. The City of New York has no legal right to end our contracts, and if they elect to proceed, they will owe The Trump Organization over $30 million,” he said. “This is nothing more than political discrimination, an attempt to infringe on the First Amendment, and we plan to fight vigorously.”

The carousel is currently closed and will be removed from Trump’s hands 25 days after a notice is delivered to his business, de Blasio said. The deal for the Wollman and Lasker rinks will end 30 days after the notice.

Canceling the Trump Links contracts is more complicated and will take “months,” the mayor said.
