‘Election’ actress Campbell, 38, dies
Jessica Campbell, the former actress who starred opposite Reese Witherspoon in the 1999 black comedy “Election,” has died at age 38.
The Portland, Ore., resident died of unknown causes Dec. 29, leaving behind a 10-year-old son, Oliver, her cousin Sarah Wessling said on GoFundMe.
“Our dear Jessica suddenly and unexpectedly passed away,” Wessling wrote on the fund-raising website.
“So heart broken to hear this. Working with Jessica on Election was such a pleasure. I’m sending all my love to Jessica’s family and loved ones,” Witherspoon said in a Twitter post reacting to the sad news.
Wessling told TMZ that Campbell (photo) worked a normal day at her naturopathic medical practice but later collapsed in a bathroom while visiting with her mother and aunt.
Campbell had complained of congestion and thought she was getting a cold, but the family didn’t suspect COVID-19, Wessling reportedly said.
Autopsy results were not immediately available.
“Campbell played Tammy Metzler in “Election,” a cynical but endearing younger student who throws her hat into a student body election after her girlfriend starts dating her dimwit brother, played by Chris Klein.
The role won her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for best debut performance.
She also acted in the 2001 movie “The Safety of Objects” and had a two-episode guest arc playing an intersex character on the TV series “Freaks and Geeks.”
Judd Apatow, an executive producer on “Freaks and Geeks,” donated $5,000 to her memorial fund.
