Biden, Macron in warm chat

It could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

President Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron held a friendly phone call Sunday afternoon, a bid to restore Franco-American fraternité after four years of troubled relations under former President Donald Trump.

Biden voiced “his desire to strengthen bilateral ties with our oldest ally” and “stressed his commitment to bolstering the transatlantic relationship, including through NATO and the United States’ partnership with the European Union,” according to the White House.

Macron again congratulated Biden, “recalled the historic relationship that binds our two countries” and “emphasized his determination to act alongside the United States to realize our common goals,” according to the French government.

Biden was sworn into office last week after promising to return the U.S. to its leadership role on the world stage — a stark contrast with Trump’s isolationist, “America first” approach.

Among his first steps, he issued an executive order rejoining the Paris climate agreement, in which about 200 countries have committed to reducing carbon emissions.

Trump repeatedly irked European leaders, including Macron, by lambasting the European Union, praising Russian strongman Vladimir Putin and engaging in awkward encounters like conspicuously long handshakes.
