Football star welcomes new baby
There’s a new addition to Patrick Mahomes’ family roster.
The superstar quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and fiancée Brittany Matthews welcomed their baby daughter Saturday, announcing the birth of their first child in a pair of posts on Instagram on Sunday.
“Sterling Skye Mahomes,” the NFL star captioned the Instagram image, which shows the infant’s tiny hand wrapped around her mother’s finger. Sterling was born at 6 pounds, 11 ounces, Matthews wrote in her post, which featured the same photo. Mahomes (photo) and Matthews announced the pregnancy last September, shortly after the high school sweethearts from Texas got engaged. In October, they announced they were expecting a daughter through a gender-reveal video posted on Instagram.
Mahomes played college football at Texas Tech University; Matthews played soccer at the University of Texas at Tyler.
The quarterback won his first Super Bowl championship in 2020 and earlier this month appeared in the title game once again, but fell to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 31-9.
In December, the 25-year-old Mahomes talked about his growing family during an interview with the Kansas City sports radio station KCSP, describing it as “bigger than football.”
“Those things are special that you don’t get to happen a lot in your life,” Mahomes said on the show.
“Being able to be a dad and being able to get married here soon, I’m truly thankful for that.”
Drafted by the Chiefs in 2017, Mahomes has posted a 38-8 regular season record as a starter and has thrown 114 touchdown passes against just 24 interceptions.
He was named both the NFL’s Most Valuable Player and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 after he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdown passes.
Last year, Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs, giving him a deal worth $503 million.
Sunday’s big baby announcement was met with a series of celebratory messages from the football world.
