A personal rundown of mayors past

- Ron Troy

East Northport, L.I.: I read the article on NYC mayors (“Ed, Dave, Rudy, Mike, Bill and me,” op-ed, Feb. 28) and found myself in overall agreement, much to my surprise. I’d add a few notes: I first met Ed Koch just after he left office sitting across the table from him at Elaine’s (during an Ed Kyatt dinner). He was kind of shellshocked at that time. I used to call him Mr. Ed for all of the crazy things he said, but in some ways, he was the mayor NYC needed for those crazy times.

Rudy — the most pitiful excuse for a human being I’ve ever met, even before he became mayor. I met him at a street fair, talked to him a bit and knew instantly he’d be a horrible mayor, which he was.

Mike had almost zero empathy and was ruthlessly efficient, and very necessary. And honest.

De Blas: big part of why I’m glad I no longer live in the city, though I’m writing this from one of the outer boroughs. Don’t trust him in the slightest, assume that everything he touches turns to rust or dust.

David: I met him just before he became borough president. One of the nicest and funniest, yet most dignified, people I’ve ever met. Just seeing him would make me smile. Yes, he made some mistakes, but he did a lot of good. Got so much started that Rudy took credit for. When that cab driver on Park Ave. refused David, I felt the pain — maybe because he appointed me to my neighborhood community board and made me feel that he cared that I was on it.
