Dr. Oz to the rescue for heart victim

- BY THOMAS TRACY

Celebrity physician Dr. Memhet Oz helped Port Authority police revive a man who suffered a heart attack inside Newark Airport, authorities said Tuesday.

The 60-year-old New Jersey man was standing by a baggage carousel inside Terminal A just after 11 p.m. on Monday when he lost consciousness and collapsed to the floor.

Port Authority Police Officer Jeffrey Croissant saw the man fall, ran over and started performing CPR, officials said.

The victim “looked like a tree falling,” Croissant remembered.

As Croissant took a moment to check the victim’s pulse and clear his airway, Dr. Oz (photo top), who was also in the baggage area, jumped in to help with chest compressions.

“I’m a doctor, keep going,” Dr. Oz said as they both worked on the man, a source with knowledge of the case said.

Croissant, a three-year Port Authority Police Department member who also served nine years in the NYPD, and Dr. Oz continued to perform CPR on the victim until Port Authority Officers Michael Bock, Matthew Vecchione and Daniel Olbrich arrived, started oxygen and deployed a defibrillator on him.

After a few more rounds of CPR, the man started breathing on his own, officials said. Medics took the man to University Hospital in Newark for further care.

Dr. Oz had flown to the East Coast to film a guest spot on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” which taped Tuesday morning. With everyone in the terminal wearing masks, Croissant had no idea he was performing CPR with a celebrity until another cop recognized Dr. Oz.

“What better help to have than a cardiac surgeon?” Croissant joked.

Dr. Oz didn’t respond to requests for comment Tuesday.
